The Effects of Potassium Ion on the Regulation of Cell Volume of Rat Brain and Skeletal Muscle Tissues


Abstract
This study was carried out to define the effect of high potassium and calcium free solution on central nervous system and skeletal muscle.
The changes of the cell volume was determined by measuring the wet weight and dry weight of tissue slices.
The oxygen consumption rate of slices of cerebral cortex, cerebellum and skeletal muscle of albino rat were determined using the Warburg¢¥s manometric apparatus.
The results are summarized as follows.
1. The cell volume in medium with _30mM NaCl replaced with 30mM KCI, was increased in cerebral cortex, cerebellum and skeletal muscle.
2. The cell volume in calcium free medium was increased in cerebral cortex but decreased in cerebellum and skeletal muscle.
3. The oxygen consumption rate in medium with 30mM NaC1 replaced with 30mM KCl, was increased in cerebral cortex, cerebellum and skeletal muscle. -
4. The oxygen consumption rate in calcium free medium was increased in cerebral cortex, cerebellum and skeletal muscle.
